FLYING SAUCER

On Thursday the 11 of November at 1:30am, Campbell Nisbet a 20 year old man from Christchurch, say’s he saw what looked like a flying saucer.

He lived in Brooklands and was listening to the radio when he saw a red flash come through his bedroom window, it was 60m off the ground, moving in a spiral and zig zagging around, he thought, it couldn’t be a plane, because a pilot wouldn’t be that silly.

Campbell said it moved towards him on an angle, he said he saw an outline of a flying saucer.

Campbell tried to take a photo on his cell phone, but it was moving too quickly. His brother was asleep in the same room, but didn’t wake up.

It lasted for about 20minutes, and then seemed to move toward Kaikoura.

Campbell said he thought there “was always something out there” and was scared when he saw it move towards him.

The Colossal Squid

On the 31st of October, I went to up to Te Papa with my family. It had been a couple of years since we last went, but the new display that I was interested in this time, was that of the colossal squid.

It was captured by New Zealand fishermen as it swam for food in the Antarctic waters. It took them nearly two hours to catch the squid and it was nearly 10 meters long.

As the colossal squid has a deep-sea habitat, it makes them difficult to study, and almost everything scientists know about them has been from carcasses that have washed up on beaches.

The colossal squid have the largest eyes in the animal kingdom, measuring some 25 centimeters in diameter. These massive eyes allow them to detect objects in the deep sea where most other animals would see nothing.

Their diet consists of fish, shrimp, and other squid, and some suggest they might even attack and eat small whales. They bring the food to their mouths using their long feeding tentacles.

Te Papa have a fantastic video documenting how he was caught, studied and then prepared for his display in the museum. He has shrunk a little bit – but still looks big to me!!!!!!

Looking backwards and looking forwards

Good morning I’m going to talk about looking backwards and looking forwards

Last year when I found out I was with Miss Boers I thought she was really strict and I was going to get into heaps of trouble and I started freaking out! However it didn’t take much time for me to realise that I’m very lucky to have Miss Boers as a teacher because she is so nice.

Not only thinking I was going to be in Miss Boers' class and that she was the scariest teacher ever, I was also going into a class that only had a couple of people from my class last year in it. I was going to be in a class with people I’ve never been with before so I really hoped I would make some new friends and I have, and they are great friends too.

I have excelled in my reading and maths this year; I have been attending Kip McGrath for an hour 20, on a Tuesday and Wednesday and have moved up a whole year group. Now I like reading and love maths, I feel a lot more confident in both subjects.

I loved going away for camp with my friends this year, our first camp away. I was pretty worried about what the food was going to be like, especially the vegetables, but the food was pretty good!! The train ride there was pretty fun.

I haven’t liked seeing my friends get hurt at school, like falling over and things. I miss school when it’s the school holidays, and I much prefer school, compared to school holiday programme. I didn’t enjoy the earthquake either; I guess we are all in the same situation on that one!!

I’m looking forward to next year, I’m nervous about the challenges that our school work may bring, having to work extra hard to be a good role model for the other children and another year with Miss Boers as she is great with guiding me and helping me in the right direction.

And even better yet….making more friendships!!!.

Looking back and looking forward
The things that I loved were going to camp, especially the river crossing, school rugby for winter sport and tennis!!!

The things that I liked were the cross country and topic. I also liked making my YouTube movie which I made with Joe R.

The things that I loathed were having to write words into spelling sentences every week, maths interchange, spraining my ankle and then getting sick and missing the tennis tournament last weekend.

I have achieved coming 2nd in the singles and 2nd in the doubles in the 9 year old boy’s Canterbury tennis open and getting into the zone rugby team. Unfortunately I could not play in it because of my ankle. I also came 6th and 7th in the cross county!

I’m looking forward to touch, tennis tournaments, cricket, camp, rugby, water skiing, my birthday and having another whole year with Miss Boers.

Discovery Time

On Friday went to discovery time. I go to lots of rooms to see what activities there are and today I worked in room two. I got a badge for helping them. It is so fun!

ABOUT ME

I was born in 2000 at Christchurch Women’s Hospital at 5.09pm.

When I was 18 months old we moved to Auckland and we lived there for a year. In 2002 we came back to Christchurch for a year then moved back to Auckland and in that September, I started School at Kohimarama Primary.

In 2006 we moved to Brisbane for 5 months, I attended West End Primary, we moved back to Auckland for 8 months and I went to Hauraki primary school, for year 1. We moved back to Christchurch in the December of 2006, I came to Waimairi School in 2007, and started in year 2 with Miss Aspinall in room 8.

In year 3 I moved classes, Mrs smith was my teacher in room 7 and for year 4 in room 15.

Now in year 5 Miss Boers is my teacher for next year too, then I’m off to Heaton Intermediate and for high school, boy’s high.

Good morning Room 17. Today I will sell you something disgusting. Dog brain meringues with yummy horse poo icing. Here is how you make them:

Ingredients:

2 fresh horse poos,

2 egg whites

And 1 whole dog brain.

Method:

1. Scoop out the inside of the dog brain.

2. Beat the horse poo in a bowl, and then add the extra bits of brain.

3. Fill the brain with egg white then put them in the oven for 3-4 mins.

4. When they are cooked fill them with your dog poo mixture.

5. Enjoy your tasty treat!

Canterbury quake

Hello Room 17. Today I’m going to talk to you about the massive earthquake that hit Canterbury at 4.35am on Saturday, 4^th September.

While most people were still asleep, a massive 7.1 magnitude earthquake which was centered near Darfield, significantly affected Christchurch and surrounding areas. Many of the old and heritage buildings were destroyed or suffered serious damage. The numbers are still being calculated, but it is thought that over 100,000 buildings will need repairing and many will need to be rebuilt.

There were a few welfare centers set up for people whose homes were not safe to live in anymore. The sewage and water were affected for many days in several parts of the city. In some of these areas, it still remains a problem. A lot of jobs have been lost, but also many will be created as the province prepares to fix what was destroyed or damaged.

Over 300 after shocks have hit since the big earthquake. I hope that these will soon stop.

Ship sinks in 10 mins

Good morning Rm 17. Today I am going to speak to you about the sinking of a fishing vessel, the Oyang 70.

On Wednesday, 18 August at 4:37am a mayday call was received from the ship. It was 750km off the coast of Dunedin and was thought to be pulling in fishing gear when it capsized.

A nearby vessel was quickly on the scene and managed to pick up 45 of the crew members which had made it into life rafts from the sinking ship. Unfortunately, six crew members died. Three bodies were recovered from the area where the ship went down and another three, including the ship’s captain, have not been found yet. It is presumed that they have drowned.

The survivor’s were then brought back to Lyttelton on the rescue ship. They were mainly Filipino and Chinese men and would have returned to their home countries by now.

An investigation into the accident is currently underway, but this may take up to 5 months to complete.

You will need:

-sodium acetate

1. Dissolve sodium acetate in near boiling water. Do this until no more goes into the liquid

2. Stir constantly

3. When dissolved pour into glass

4. Cool in fridge

5. Make sure undissolved chemical stays in pan

6. pour into tray

“Hot Ice” Explanation:

There is no chemical reaction. The “hot ice” process is just re-crystallisation that happens to be exothermic. Exothermic means that energy is produced, in this situation the energy produced is heat. This trick works because sodium acetate is made up of tiny crystals

The boiling solution of sodium acetate becomes supersaturated which means that it contains more of the dissolved crystals than it normally could. (This is because we boiled the water)

When you touch the surface of the clear solution it begins to crystallise and you've made what appears to be hot ice! This is because the crystallised sodium acetate looks like ice and, since the crystallization process is exothermic, it feels warm to the touch.

My Australian Adventure

On the 30th of July I went on holiday to see my Dad in Brisbane Australia, but I didn’t realise how adventurous my holiday was going to be!!!!

A couple of hours into my flight on Air New Zealand, the pilot spoke on the loud speaker and told us that Brisbane Airport was closed because of Fog and we weren’t going to be able to land, so we would fly to Sydney instead!!!

I thought, “oh my goodness – I just want to go to Brisbane”, at the same time I thought it was pretty cool we were going to go to Sydney!!!!

As we were coming into land into Sydney, I saw the Sydney Opera House and Sydney looked huge!!!

I was travelling as an unaccompanied minor.

When we landed in Sydney, I was taken to an unaccompanied minor room and waited for several hours, with another boy, who was travelling as an unaccompanied minor to Brisbane as well, until we got on a Qantas flight and flew to Brisbane.

It was a very long day, Mum had woken me up at 3:30 in the morning, to go to Christchurch airport, and I finally landed in Brisbane at 2:30 in the afternoon, local time, which was 4:30 in the afternoon, Christchurch time.

It was just the beginning of an exciting holiday though, I went to Dreamworld twice, the movies and lots and lots of Thai!!!

It’s nice to be home, but I can’t wait for my next adventure!!!

Book Review

Conspiracy 365- January

Today I am going to speak to you about one of the best books that I have ever read. It was the first in the Conspiracy 365 series written by Gabrielle Lord. It was action packed from the very first word until the final full stop.

The main character is Cal Ormond. On New Years Eve he was chased down the street by a stranger warning him of the incredible danger that he faced for the next 365 days. He didn’t really understand this message until everything started going horribly wrong.

First he was stranded at sea when someone sabotaged the buoyancy tank of his boat. Then his house was robbed and he was blamed for the attempted murder of his sister and his uncle, even though he was completely innocent.

He is trying to clear his name, stay alive and also solve the mystery of his dead father’s puzzle.

Paul the octopus

Hello room 17. I am sure that you have all heard of Paul the octopus. Paul was born in England but now he lives in Germany. He predicts who will win a soccer match and 9/10 times he has got it right. Two separate plastic boxes, each with food inside, were presented to Paul. Each box had one of the two playing team’s flags on it. He would choose his food from the team that he thought was going to win. He ate the mussel in Spain’s box when it was the f.i.f.a world cup leaving out the Netherlands. Paul was believed to have been hatched from an egg at the Sea Life Centre in Weymouth, England, then moved to a tank at one of the chain's centres in Oberhausen, Germany. Some people claimed that Paul the Octopus had actually been caught in April 2010, by Verena Bartsch, off the island of Elba.

His name was taken from the title of a poem by the German children's writer Boy Lornsen and its called Der Tintenfisch Paul Oktopus.

Some other animals tried, but did not do so well in predicting the champions of the world cup.

Moko The Dolphin

This morning I am going to talk about Moko the Dolphin.

Moko the dolphin played with people in New Zealand oceans and became famous for stealing boogie boards and boat paddles and was very cheeky.

Moko stayed around the East Coast of the North Island, he grew to 3 metres in length and weighed 250 kilograms.

Moko loved to interact with humans and helped rescue teams with directing a whale and her baby back out to sea, when it came in too close to a beach and got stuck.

Moko was 4 years old and was found dead on the 9^th of July, by surfers, who saw him lying on the beach of Matakana Island, which is near Tauranga.

Moko had been lying on the beach for 2 weeks, and it seems like he may have died from natural causes, rather than an accident.

There are many people that kept an eye out for Moko, making sure Moko was safe and protected. These people are very sad about Moko’s death, because Moko was a friend and a very special blessing to New Zealand.

Moko was last seen alive 2 weeks before he died, darting in between people who were kayaking.

Moko’s life was celebrated on July the 17^th in Whakatane, with songs and photos, before being driven to be buried on Matakana Island to be buried and remembered where he was found.

Rest in peace Moko.

Hello, my name is Jordan Nicole S. I have two sisters called Caitlin and Elise. Caitlin is 7 and Elise is 3. I was born in Wellington with 1 dislocated hip that soon sorted its self out.

Then I moved to Auckland, then to Christchurch.

When living in Northwood Christchurch, I split the back of my head. You are probably wondering why so I will tell you. I was 3 and was playing with my 4 year old aunty, jumping from bed to bed when I fell onto a nearby oil heater head first. The doctor had to glue my skin back together because I refused to have stitches.

When I was 3 years old I went to Fiji with my family. I was in the water just like that, swimming round with my snorkel trying to find cool types of fish. We saw bright blue starfish, yellow & blue, and orange & white tropical fish just like on Nemo. Me and Caitlin went to the kids club at the resort. We played games, did colouring in and watched t.v. We went to the Kula Eco Park. We got to hold a small snake and an iguana. Caitlin had fallen asleep on mum so she put the iguana on Caitlin’s head while she slept! I love it there, the water was so warm and we swam most of the day. I wish I was there right now.

I used to have an Abysinnian kitten called Charlie, she was nice but just a bit crazy. We gave her to a new home with older children. After that we got some rats, they were cool! I got to go on the Go Show and talk about them. They still show my episode every now and then, it’s pretty old now...I was four! Now we have our puppy Inca. It took a long time for mum and dad to finally agree to get a puppy. Labrador’s live about 15 years...so it was a big commitment!!

I also did jazz when I was 4 and our song was rubber ducky it was sooo cute.

An interview with a cactus

Q. So you must have a pretty boring life just being a cactus. Is it as boring as we think?

A. Boring? You think my life is boring? Well it's not. In fact my life is anything but boring. For example, just last night I was having a shower out of something called a watering can and then all of a sudden something popped out of my right leg.

Q. Really? What was it?

A. Actually, it was a new prickle baby! I was finally a mother! We celebrated all night but in the morning something called the finger poked my precious baby. I was devastated. How dare it poke my little prickle baby! I was determined to get them back and fast!

Q. So what did you do?

A. Well, the next time they were holding me I wiggled around in my pot and they dropped me on their toes! I was satisfied.

Q. Ouch! Did it hurt you?

A. I couldn't remember much because I passed out but when I woke up I was in a dreadful place. I was crowded in with fish bones and carrot skins. It was awful and smelly and I couldn't believe I was being treated so horribly.

Q. Then what happened?

A. I was just lying there and the I got picked out by... you!

Q. Yeah?

A. Nothing much happened after that. Oh well sir, better be leaving now. I've got a million things to do. Bye.

Favourite Sports

Good morning. Today I am going to talk a bit about my favourite sports. They are tennis, rugby and swimming.

Firstly, tennis. I have been playing tennis for five years. My best placing in a tournament was second in the ten year olds. My favourite shot is my inside out forehand. I play for the Waimairi Tennis Club and I play interclub in the twelve year old boys grade. My doubles partner is Louie C. I want to be a pro when I grow up.

Secondly, rugby. I play for High School Old Boys in the under tens. I play Hooker which is in the front row. I have been playing rugby since I was four. My favourite players are Richie McCaw, Daniel Carter and Brad Thorne. I love getting muddy on wet days.

Finally, swimming. I have been swimming at AquaGym for three years and I’m in mini squad. I swim on Tuesday@ 5:30 till 6:30pm.

How to Sew a Cupcake Pincushion

What you need:

* Some material or old sweater – whatever color you like

* Craft Glue – a nice heavy one

* Scissors

* Needle

* Thread – to match material

* Stuffing

* Cupcake paper

* Plastic beads or beans to weigh down bottom
Optional (for decoration):

* Ribbon

* Buttons

* Felt

* Beads

Instructions

1. Glue together some cupcake papers. Do not take individual papers apart. Just carefully

take apart the stack so you get a stack of about ten papers, then dab some glue

around the rim of the papers. Leave them to dry.

2. Place the cupcake papers on your material face down and cut a circle about one and a

half inches bigger than the paper out of the material.

3. Stitch along the outside of your circle.

4. When all the way around the circle, pull the thread tight to form a ball, then make a

knot where the beginning of the thread meets the end again. Leave enough space

to put the stuffing in.

5. Stuff the gathered circle. This will be the top of your cupcake.

6. Place your cupcake papers bottom down on the sweater and cut another small circle.

Then glue the circle to the inside bottom of papers.

7. Pour your plastic beads or beans into the bottom of your papers, just enough to cover the

bottom.

8. Apply glue to the open end of your cupcake as well as the upper inside

rim of your cupcake papers.

9. Place the top of the cupcake into the papers. Wrap your fingers around the rim of the

papers and gently squeeze while pushing the top of the cupcake down slightly until the

glue starts to set a little (approximately one minute). This will give your cupcake an

realistic look. Then just set aside to dry.

10. Add some ribbon, buttons, felt, beads or whatever else you can think of.

The All Blacks introduced six new players in the test match. Two new players got tries.

My favourite players are Brad Thorne, Richie McCaw and Dan Carter. My great-uncle Charlie Saxton was an All Black and invented the dive pass.

This Saturday the All Blacks are versing Wales. I think the All Blacks are going to win!!!

How to make a jean leg cushion.

Materials you will need:

1 pair old jeans

Dakron (or an old duvet)

Thread

Needle

Scissors

Method:

1. Cut the jeans through at about the knee area (depending on how long you would like your cushion to be).

2. Fold the jean leg inside out and sew a running stitch along the cut edge.

3. Turn the jean leg back in the right way and stuff with dakron until it is full.

4. Sew the other end with blanket stitch right across to close the cushion up.

5. You have now made a jean leg cushion.

HOW TO MAKE AMERICAN FUDGE BROWNIE

Ingredients

330 grams of butter

1¼ cup cocoa

3 cups sugar

¼ teaspoon salt

7 eggs

½ teaspoon vanilla essence

1¼ cup flour

2/3 teaspoon Baking Powder

2 cups chocolate chips

Materials

Sponge pan

Beater

Sieve

Three bowls

Baking paper

Measuring spoons

Measuring cup

Method

Wash your hands.

Melt butter completely. Pour onto cocoa in mixer and combine.

Add sugar, beaten eggs and vanilla.

Mix on high speed until colour lightens slightly (aprrox. 5 mins)

Add flour, baking powder, salt and chocolate chips.

Mix until just combined.

Pour into large, lined sponge tin.

Bake 150 degrees for 1 hour.

Should crack around the edges, but still be soft to the touch.

Let cool before cutting.

Pack up your mess.

Eat it yummm!

How to make Chocolate Crackles!!!

To make chocolate crackles you will the need these ingredients:

250g Kremelta

4 Cups Rice Bubbles

1 Cup Icing Sugar

3 Tablespoons Cocoa

1 Cup Desiccated Coconut

Materials:

Pot

Sieve

24 Paper cases

Spoon

Steps:

1. Firstly, put the Kremelta into the pot on a stove on a low heat to gently melt.

2. Then add the rice bubbles, coconut and sifted icing sugar and cocoa into the melted Kremelta.

3. Give it a good stir until the ingredients are well mixed.

4. Spoon the mixture evenly into the paper cases.

5. Put them into the fridge until they are set.

Eat.

Why my big brother is annoying

Hi room 17

Do you think big brothers are annoying? Well I do and I’m going to tell you why my big brother is so annoying.

He is always so noisy. When I am trying concentrate on something, like writing this speech, he decides it’s a great time to play his drums. It’s so loud even the neighbours can’t concentrate. Crash, bang, boom.

He’s always getting in my face and being nosy and trying to see my stuff. Aren’t I allowed anything secret?

My big brother always hogs the computer and the play station so I hardly get a turn. That’s so unfair!

I am soooo over Michel Jackson. If I hear Billie Jean one more time I’m gonna scream!

Whenever we go to a friend’s house, him and his friend set traps for us which really gets on my nerves. Why can’t they play something which doesn’t bug me?

So now you know why I think my big brother is so annoying.

Does anyone want to trade him for a big sister?

DISNEY ON ICE

Hi, today I am doing news and current events about Disney On Ice. This show just came to NZ and has had 7 days in Auckland before coming to Christchurch.

It’s a Disney show all about the Disneyland rides and the Disney characters and I was lucky enough to go with my Aunty and my Mum.

They told us that Disneyland is the happiest place in the world.

In the show they danced some of the rides you would see at Disneyland, such as, the Pirates of the Caribbean, the Jungle Cruise and Space Mountain with Buzz Light-Year. Top marks to Buzz Light-Year off Toy Story as he did an incredible back flip.

It's 2 hours of fun with amazing dancing, music and special effects such as cannons, smoke, water hoses and fireworks.

The skating was amazing and at one stage one of the female pirates was spun round in dizzying circles just millimetres from the ice.

Every night at Disneyland there is an electric light parade and at the end of this show they lit Cinderella’s carriage with lights to show us what it is like.

As they say Disneyland is the happiest place in the world.

My hobbie is dancing and playing with dogs.

DANCING.

I do dancing every week on Friday. I do dancing at Movement Dance Centre. MDC (for short) had just had a dance extravaganza on the 9th of May and I only made one mistake in the first show. I do hip hop at MDC and I used to do tap and jazz at Impact with my friend Tayla. I love dancing and I think its a great way to end the week.

DOGS

Whenever I go and see my dogs I always make them tired. Ella and Maxi are the cutest dogs I have ever seen. I really want a dog or two but we have two cats so I am not allowed one. I LOVE DOGS!

I have many more hobbies like netball and sewing but I don't have time to talk about them right now.

in South Africa. They were celebrating Rubens' parents 12^th

year wedding anniversary, Ruben and his brother Enzo were on spring break.

The air craft they were on was an Airbus A330-200. They were just about to land on the runway when the plane exploded. There were 11 crew and 94 passengers on board, Ruben was the only survivor. When the plane exploded, some of the parts just about hit a nearby house. Ruben was found strapped in his seat, 1km away from the tail. The tail was all that was left of the aircraft. The wreckage of the plane was 140km long.

Ruben had surgery for 4 hours, on both legs. His head, neck and face were not seriously injured. He is resting in hospital, with his Aunty and Uncle visiting him. On Saturday May 15 2010 he still did not know that his family was killed in the crash.

On the tyre ladder on the second step. I slipped off one tyre .
Secondly I broke my arm when I was 7 or 8 years old.
I broke two bones, it happened on the cycle path on my scooter.
I flew over the handle bars.
We think I went over a little stone. After that I went to hospital.
I firstly went in the plaster room, after that I could not eat or drink for 4 hours. Then it was time to go to theatre, they put a special mask on me so I went to sleep while watching a video clip.
My arm was in a MASSIVE cast up to my shoulder the cast was very heavy and my arm got tired and very itchy. That night I had no sleep because I had medicine every two hours.
Last week I sprained my wrist by falling off my ripstick backwards.
Surprisingly I did not hurt my bottom I thought I had broken my wrist.
I got the morning off school because I was at the Doctors.

Tennis

The history of tennis dates back several thousand years. The game was first created by European monks to be played for entertainment purposes. To start with the tennis ball was hit with the hand. Later on the leather glove was introduced to the game, also for hitting the ball. This was soon replaced with a handle for better serving and a faster game and that was how the first racquet came to be. The tennis ball also went through many changes. The first was a wooden ball the second a bouncier leather ball. The game was very popular.

My favourite tennis player is Roger Federer. He has won 16 grand slams and lost 6.

My best stoke is my forehand. I have been playing for 5 and a half years I have won 5 trophies and 5 medals. I started playing in tournaments when I was 8.

This is my racquet. It is a Wilson k-blade size 26.

Making Jelly

On Thursday I made raspberry jelly for my reading activity.

We tipped the raspberry jelly into a bowl then we added the hot water.

We stirred it with a wooden spoon.

We put it into 4 cups. After that we put the jelly in the fridge to set.

The Fashion Show

In a land far, far away there lived a alien called Gobby. Every Friday at 3:45 he went to sewing lessons and he loved it there.That Friday his teacher Jane told him that there was a fashion show in three weeks time and he had to model the things he made.

Gobby found this very exiting,so he decided to share the news at show and tell the next day.He told the class and they all laughed at him, including his teacher Miss Gobbleworth.Miss Gobbleworth was a nasty old hag and she laughed like an evil witch. At interval no one wanted to play with him because they said that boys don't sew.He felt miserable and oh so gloomy.

Two weeks past by and he only just realised that he had only made a top and no pants. Jane told him that he would have to walk in his top and undies.The day came and Gobby was waiting in the dressing room and he saw another boy just in a t-shirt, like him. Jane told them that they had to walk together."Next up is Gobby and his partner" the speaker said.When he walked out he saw his whole class and miss gobbeworth

Today I’m going to talk about aircraft engines, the cockpit, the biggest aircraft, and the longest flight.

Jet engines are also called gas turbines. They work by sucking air into the front of the fan, squeezing the air together, mixing with fuel, which makes an electric spark. This burning gas then blasts out through the back of the engine or nozzle. This makes the aircraft thrust forward.

The cockpit is where the pilot controls the plane. It is also known as the flight deck. They have an instrument panel, the flight instruments let the pilot know the aircrafts speed and height. The instruments help the pilot see if they can’t see out the window if there is bad weather.

The biggest aircraft in the world is an AN225 it can

hold up to 1500 people, it has 6 engines it’s length is 84m and it weighs 640 tonnes. The AN225 has 30 landing gear wheels and its cargo hold, where we would usually have our bags stored can hold up to 8 Double Decker buses.

The longest airplane flight was on December the 4^th 1958. Bob Timm and John Cook took the longest flight in the world and didn’t land again until February the 7^th 1959. They flew in a Cessna 172. The distance they flew was equivalent to flying 6 times around the earth. They left from Las Vegas and did not land for 64 days. A car followed the plane the entire time, they would swoop down low to grab food and water and they re-fueled in-flight.

Today I made Choc Chip Chelsea Buns (with some help from my mum).

They take a long time to make as you have to wait for the dough to rise in between, just like making bread.

Here is the recipe:

1 tablespoon sugar, ½ cup warm water (but not hot), 1 tablespoon active yeast, ½ cup milk, 50g butter, 2 eggs, 4 cups of high grade flour.

Dissolve the sugar in the water. Sprinkle the yeast over it. Leave for 10 minutes or until frothy. Heat the milk (scald). Add in the butter and stir til melted. Cool. Beat in the eggs. Place flour in a large bowl. Max a well in the centre and put the yeast and milk mix in. Mix with a wooden spoon. Tip it all out onto a floured board and knead until smooth and elastic ( this bit was really hard work and we all took turns). Place in a greased bowl, cover with cling film and sit the bowl in a nice warm spot until it is double in size. The you get to punch the dough to flatten the air out. Turn on to a floured surface and knead until smooth. Roll out into a rectangle shape.

Melt 25 g butter, brush this all over the surface.

Mix ½ cup brown sugar, 1 tsp cinnamon, 1 cup choc chips together. Sprinkle this evenly all over the top of the dough.

Roll the dough up along the long side to make a big sausage. Cut off slices about 2.5 cm wide. Place them on a greased oven tray slightly apart.

Cover them with a dry cloth and put them back in a warm spot until the rise and are touching.

Bake at 190 degrees Celsius for approx minutes or until golden (ours only took 25 minutes). You can ice them if you want after wards.

Oil rig sinks in the Gulf of Mexico

On Tuesday, April the 20^th an oil rig off the coast of the USA in the Gulf of Mexico exploded. The cause of the accident is being investigated but it is thought that workers on the rig incorrectly capped the well. The explosion killed 11 men. The rig sunk two days later and the well continues to spew an estimated 760,000 liters of oil into the sea each day.

Efforts are being made to contain the oil but conditions have been difficult for the rescue teams. The sea has been too rough and the winds too strong to burn off the oil, suck it up or keep it contained within the inflatable booms that they put out on top of the water. These barriers broke loose in the choppy water and the oil went over them. The biggest problem is that many birds and fish will lose their habitats as the oil destroys the environment that they live in.

The priority for the USA is to shut off the well and to stop the leaking oil. They hope to move another rig close to the well and use this to inject concrete to prevent the flow of oil. If that fails the plan is to build a container over each of the three leaks to trap the oil, allowing it to be pumped up to container ships on the surface.

Week one of sewing

This week we have been learning how to sew. We made a needle book & my needle book had six buttons and I also stitched my name. Later this term I am making a pair of slippers. When I started I couldn't stitch my button. Me , Sam.G, Finn & Tyler were sitting on a circle & stitching together.
