Good morning room 17.Today I am doing news current events and I have 2 short articles to talk about.

Swimmer buried alive

An Austrian Olympic swimmer accidentally buried himself alive on a beach in Florida and had to be saved by 60 rescuers.

19-year-old Jakub Maly had been taking time off from training with teammates when he decided to dig an enormous hole for fun.
But when he jumped into the two metre hole, the sand collapsed over him covering his entire body.
Friends quickly cleared the sand from around his face so that he could breathe - but they were unable to pull him from the hole.
Emergency services were called and cave-in specialists spent nearly two hours trying to dig him up
Jakub spent a night in hospital before flying back to Australia.

Bursting Watermelons!!!

Watermelon farmers in china are losing acres of fruit in attempt to make more money and have bigger watermelons to sell.

The farmers sprayed a growth acceleration their watermelons, during overly wet weather and put it on too late in the season, which made the melons burst. It said most watermelons sold at a wholesale market in nearby Shanghai were believed to have been treated with it. This has made the melons explode all over the place!!! . Farmers resorted to chopping up the fruit and feeding it to fish and pigs. The CCTV report described the watermelons as "land mines" and said they were exploding by the acre. Farmer Liu Mingsuo ended up with eight acres of ruined fruit and told CCTV he couldn't sleep because he kept picturing exploding watermelons."On May 7, I came out and counted 80 bursting watermelons but by the afternoon it was 100," Liu said. "Two days later I didn't bother to count anymore."

About 20 farmers and 115 acres of watermelons were affected.

Spain’s Earthquake

On the 11^th of May, a 5.2 earthquake hit the ancient city of Lorca on the southeastern coast of Spain. It was Spain’s deadliest earthquake in over 50 years and has killed at least 9 people, injured 130 and left more than 300 homeless.

The epicenter was only 1 km deep and as it was so shallow, the shaking was quite violent which caused damage to nearly all the buildings in town. The day after the earthquake some residents where allowed back into their properties to salvage their belongings.

As with our own earthquake, many families left the city to go to neighboring towns to stay with family or friends and schools, restaurants and shops were closed.

TORNADOES

Tornadoes happen on land. They have very strong winds and destroy most things in their path. Did you know Tornadoes are smaller and faster than Hurricanes?

A Tornado spins very fast and makes a funnel. When the funnel touches the ground, it works like a giant vacuum cleaner and sucks things into the air.

A Tornado is a violent rotating column of air extending to the ground. The most violent tornadoes are capable of doing tremendous destruction with a wind speed of up to 300 mph. They can destroy large buildings, rip trees off the ground and throw vehicles hundreds of meters.

Did you know in an average year 1000 Tornadoes are reported in America?

Did you know the fastest tornado recorded, was 457 kmh? It happened in Texas U.S.A 1958.

TORNADO IN A BOTTLE

Materials:

2 1.5 liter bottles or 2 2.00 liter bottles

Tornado tube

Water

What to do:

1. Fill one bottle ¾ of the way to the top with water.
2. Screw the Tornado tube on to both tops of the bottles.
3. Tip the bottle with water in it.
4. Spin the bottle around and around until you see a Tornado shape which is called a vortex.

Japan's earthquake!!!

On Friday 11 march 2011 a massive earthquake struck Japan. The earthquake measured 8.9 on the richer scale. It killed over 10000 people but that’s all they know for now. But they have another problem a nuclear power plant leak so they're getting doctors to check them and give them medicine.

They don’t have much food or water so they get a little rice ball and a bottle of water. Japan also has had a tsunami which they also had to go through.

I think Japan will never be the same

They're elegant and graceful and have phenomenal strength.

The magnificent mustang roams the wide open spaces of Colorado, with pride.

These exquisite creatures are admirable but some can be quite grotesque!

They are as fast as lightning,have a muscular build and they are naturally equipped for the wild

They definitely have a beautiful appearance and are made with excellence.

You probably couldn't afford an extraordinary Mustang because they are really expensive.

The Mustang population is 13156.

I was born in England.

My family members are: my mum my dad my sister and me.

My favourite winter sport is rugby, because you get to hurt people.

My favourite place to be on Christmas is Kaitaia because I can go diving and dig for pipis.

My sister is 2 years younger than me. She’s very annoying. And she loves silly bandz.

My dad is 29 and he loves motorbikes.

My mum is 35 and she loves clothes.

Goose and highland bull living together for 10 years

Gisborne's weirdest couple have been together for 10 years. The goose and the bull “Hamish” have been together since January 2001. The lodge's owner and "head gardener", Kees Weytmans, said all the animals used to be in the same area - there were geese, Highland cattle, 10 emus, a pig, 10 deer and two cattle beasts.

Before Hamish was born there was a massive fight between the animals and the gooses mate was killed. They guessed it was one of the emus who did it. The goose was not herself for a few days after the incident. Then 2 weeks later Hamish was born and people remember the goose lying down in the paw of the calf and they have been friends every since.

"We think that the love is from the goose to Hamish rather than the other way around. We reckon the goose is a girl, but we have no idea," he said. The goose is Hamish’s shadow and is very jealous over him. Geese are among the birds that stay together for life as well as paradise ducks, pigeons, swans, bald eagles, red-tailed hawks and penguins.

Massive tree falls across road

Good morning room 17.

On Friday, Feb 11, a massive 40m tree crashed across Grahams Road which is just a couple of streets over from Jellie Park. One man was extremely lucky because the tree only clipped the boot of his car. When the colossal tree fell, it also knocked down a carport and broke windows of a house.

The council had to cordon off the road while the tree was cut up into smaller pieces with chainsaws. The wood was then removed to allow the road to be reopened. I wonder who got all the firewood?

The driver of the damaged car stopped to buy a lotto ticket on the way home – it was obviously his lucky day.

In the school holidays I went to Australia with my mum and my brother. It was really really fun because we went to all the theme parks. They were really exciting and the most exciting one was movie world because it had really cool bumper carts. I didn't get to drive it much because my brother decided he wanted to drive. We went to Movie World two times because my brother wanted to go on the dodgem carts again. We also went to Sea World two times. I liked going on the climbing wall, it was good fun. Dream World was really cool because you could go on a ride called Sponge Bob Fly Pants. It was so cool because you just go round and round and round and round and get really dizzy!
